The Islander Trading Post on Sanibel Island, Florida opened it’s doors in August 1988. Ironically it was exactly 10 years earlier in 1978 that Bob Averill, owner of Islander trading Post completely removed all of the interior cases and hardware from a nineteenth century General Store in a small mining town in the coal hills of rural Pennsylvania.

The Girardville , Pennsylvania General Store was located within a building which was in a state of such advanced disrepair that it would never again be able to open it’s doors. The century old oak showcases, counters and seed bins were in excellent condition and made the perfect backdrop for an antiques business. These wonderful pieces offered quite an unusual and fun opportunity to have an antique’s shop with nineteenth century “country store” atmosphere on a “tropical” island off of the coast of SW. Florida.

Well, that is exactly what the Islander Trading Post is; A pleasant and unusual diversion to those visiting Sanibel-Captiva Islands. Many visitors to the shop say it is the best antiques shop they’ve have ever been in.

We deal in country store items, vintage advertising, antique books and medical items, vintage and collectible home goods and house-wares, brewerania and soda fountain items. Almost anything for the antiquarian or curious items shopper. Something unusual or just plain “neat” in every corner.

when you are in Southwest Florida it is definitely worth the trip out to the Islander Trading Post on beautiful Sanibel Island, if just not only to see the working 1950s “original bubble blowing boy” sign. Many of those visiting our shop feel that we are “the” tourist attraction on Sanibel Island… Take a stroll through yesteryear to find memories is most every corner of the shop in one of Sanibel‘s most interesting destinations; and, we do have quite a few corners.
